BIOGRAPHY
Bassist since 1985, Zuzo started his musical career playing heavy metal. A year later he played in a blues-rock band called Druidas.
In 1987, he played in an instrumental rock band called Mr. Green. Zuzo played in this band for five years and recorded an album in 1990. At the same time, he recorded jingles and commercials, played in several clubs, and recorded with several Brazilian singers, such as Eduardo Dusek.
In 1994, Zuzo was a member of a band called Santa Claus, which ended a year later. Ever since that period of time, he has been playing and recording his own solo projects. He released four solo albums, two video classes, and a live concert on DVD. In 1995, Zuzo released his first video class, “Slap & Two-Hands Rock”.
In 1997, he released his first solo CD, “EXPRESS.” He composed all the songs, two of which he co-wrote with Alexandre Blanc. He recorded the whole album with a double neck bass with one fretted neck, and another fretless with both hands at the same time. This CD had a rock-guitar-virtuoso style. Several guitar players played on the album, such as Eduardo Ardanuy (Dr. Sin), Kiko Loureiro (Angra), Frank Solari, Alexandre Blanc, Mauro Hector, and Mello Junior, along with drummer Pablo Silva.
In 2000, Zuzo released his second album, “RAÍZES X INFLUÊNCIAS” (Roots X Influences) with a completely different approach. It was a conceptual album that mixed Brazilian and Arabic music with Funk, Blues, Jazz, and Country, in a percussive-acoustic universe. He used different basses, such as a piccolo an acoustic. Zuzo composed all the songs. Among several musicians who played on the album are Robertinho Silva (percussion), Duda Neves, Alexandre Reis, Plínio Romero and Pablo Silva (drums), Alexandre Blanc and Mauro Hector (acoustic guitars), Sami Khouri (lute, vocals), David Richards (sax), Thiago Cerveira (harmonica), Jose Simonian (flute), and Flavio Medeiros (keyboards).
In 2002, two new video classes were released called “FUNDAMENTOS DE SOLO E LEVADAS” (Groove and Solo Fundamentals). Three years later, those two videos were re-released on one DVD.
In 2005, Zuzo released his third solo CD, “PRATO DA CASA” (Dishes from Home). Half of the songs were jazz and Brazilian standards with one bass and drums performed by Pablo Silva. The other half of the songs were originals with the same instrumentation plus Zuzo’s vocals.
That same year, Zuzo was a finalist of The International Solo Bass Competition in South Carolina, USA. Zuzo played at the finals and was second place. The contest was judged by Victor Wooten, Steve Bailey, John Patitucci, Anthony Jackson, Will Lee, Greg Bisonette, and Jonathan Herrera (Bass Player Magazine).
In 2007, Zuzo released his first live concert DVD. The concert was recorded in São Paulo-Brazil, with Zuzo playing solos, duets with drummer Fernando Baggio, and trios with guitarist Mauro Hector and drummer Pablo Silva. Zuzo played songs from his three CDs, as well as three new songs. He played on five different basses.
In 2009, Zuzo graduated from Berklee College of Music, USA in film scoring.
In 2011, he released his fourth album, “ORGANIC URBAN WORLD,” a CD with one bass, drums from Fernando Baggio, and Zuzo’s vocals. All the songs were Zuzo originals with voice, two of which had lyrics by Dani Maia.
In 2012, Zuzo came back to Brazil. He is currently performing in several Jazz/Rock/Soul/Brazilian gigs as well as his solo project. Zuzo also gives classes, composes, creates arrangements, and works in musical production.
In 2015, Zuzo released the DVD “Em Casa”, recorded in Santos, the double DVD contains a solo concert with unreleased songs as well as some from his CD “Prato da Casa”. A trio show, starring Mauro Hector on the eletric guitar and Plinio Romero on the drums, with songs from his first two CDs and some unreleased songs. At the end of 2018, released Groove de Câmara (Chamber Groove). A Jazzy album with bass and string quartet that mixes Groovy styles such as soul, funk and brazilian rhythms with blues, country and arabic music. All in a mix of jazz and string quartet´s classical music.
